For someone riding public transit for the majority of my life I overlooked the importance and aesthetic appeal of transportation seating. With the Transit Chair I look to transform themes of public transport I find endearing and important into a simple rocking chair.

The Transit Chair moves side to side mimicking a train or bus’ trance-like movements. People engaging in the piece are encouraged to sit on its ergonomic seat which is loosely scaled off of measurements taken from the CTA trains. In hopes of maintaining the simple materiality of the transit aesthetic, I utilize steel tubing also seen on public trains typically weaving above and between passengers. Only after being introduced to the world of furniture design has this mundane yet essential part of city life caught my attention. I hope to share my love for public transportation through the making of these chairs.
